Booking the Alta Via 1 is not one transaction. It is a chain of separate reservations, often made through different websites and under different rules. The hard part is not finding a hut; it is making every night agree with the nights before and after it.
This guide treats the booking process as one connected itinerary.
Start with the sequence, not the reservation forms
Before entering card details anywhere, write down four things:
- Your earliest and latest possible start date.
- Your exact party size.
- The hut you expect to reach on each night.
- Any fixed transport, flight, or hotel reservation at either end.
Then check the full eight-hut sequence on HutPass. A start date that works for the first two nights but fails in the middle is not a workable date yet.
Treat the displayed result as a shortlist, not a reservation. HutPass is a cached viewer. The hut's own booking page remains authoritative.
Use one booking ledger
A simple spreadsheet or note prevents expensive mistakes. Give every night these fields:
- Date and night number.
- Preferred hut and acceptable fallback.
- Official booking URL.
- Request sent, deposit due, and deposit paid.
- Confirmation number or email.
- Cancellation deadline and conditions.
- Status: not started, waiting, held, or confirmed.
Do not call a night confirmed merely because a form was submitted. A confirmation email, accepted reservation, or required deposit is what matters. Rifugio Nuvolau, for example, says bookings are made through its website and require a 40% deposit. Rifugio Lagazuoi states that it charges a 50% deposit at booking. Rules differ, so record the rule shown during each transaction.

Some huts expose a calendar. Some use a reservation form. Others provide booking information without publishing online availability. That difference is normal; a missing calendar must not be translated into either “full” or “free.”
Book around the hardest constraint
Booking north to south feels tidy, but it can lock money into flexible nights before the difficult night is solved. First identify the reservation with the fewest workable options, then build outward from it.
The constraint may be a hut with limited dates, a large party, a fixed weekend, or a section where your safe walking plan allows few substitutes. It is not necessarily the most famous hut.

Confirm the chain after every booking
After securing a night, check the dates immediately before and after it again. A one-day change at night four shifts every later arrival date.
Before paying the next deposit, verify:
- The arrival date, not the day you start hiking.
- The number of hikers and room type.
- Whether the price is bed-only, breakfast, or half board.
- When the balance is due.
- The cancellation and late-arrival rules shown by that hut.
- That the next day's walk still fits your route plan.
Handle unanswered requests explicitly
If a hut uses email or a request form, “sent” is a separate state from “confirmed.” Set a follow-up date in your ledger and continue investigating dates, but avoid making conflicting non-refundable reservations.
When contacting a hut, include the exact date, number of guests, preferred accommodation type, and a direct question about how to confirm. Keep the message short enough to answer from a phone.
Final audit
Your booking work is complete only when every night has evidence attached to it. Read the chain once from top to bottom and once backward from the final night. The backward pass is surprisingly good at exposing a date entered incorrectly.
Save confirmations offline before travelling. Mountain connectivity is not the moment to discover that one reservation only exists in an inbox you cannot load.
